Trotting Dog Gear Co, a small Canadian business owned by Ollie, is dedicated to creating high-quality, handmade gear tailored for service and working dogs. Despite its small size, this company has gained a positive reputation among handlers for producing durable, unique products, including custom capes, harnesses, tug toys, and collars.

The collar we received from them features a sturdy 1.5-inch-wide webbing, which not only provides ample support but also helps distribute pressure evenly around the neck. The wider design also ensures that the collar is visible in Zulu’s neck fluff, which can cover 1" collars.
Our wide collar came with a large D-ring and a large plastic buckle. Both of them feel sturdy and well-attached, which makes using the collar easier.
On the inside, their collar is lined with a soft minky or fleece material, setting it apart from most collars. The addition of this lining is beneficial for dogs with shorter coats and sensitive skin, or if the dog’s hair is prone to breaking under the collar. This extra padding can also be helpful for service dogs who are wearing their collar all day.
The minky fabric on our collar is plush and very fluffy - exactly as I hoped when brainstorming on this with Ollie! The only downside of this padding is that it is not ideal for muddy hikes or swims as it soaks in the water and the collar would look worn quicker. These types of collars are better suited for city walks than off-leash hikes.
Trotting Dog Gear operates without a website; however, they are active on Instagram where customers can view their materials through Instagram Stories and mix and match the materials and colors they have in mind. You can also find them on Etsy.
As with all of Trotting Dog Gear Co’s products, our collar was fully customizable and Ollie worked with us to come up with the right colors and materials for my vision. I chose to only add Zulu’s name but each collar can be personalized with a unique text, such as the handler’s phone number which allows for a quick identification if the dog were to become separated from its handler. This can especially be helpful for fearful dogs as someone can read the phone number even if they can’t catch the dog.
In summary, Trotting Dog Gear Co. creates comfortable and highly functional products. Their personal, hands-on approach to customer service and product design made the ordering process a great experience.
