Once Zulu passed her search certification, it was time to get her a big dog collar for work.

It was a hard decision between a few other custom collar options and TactiPup, and I’m glad I went with the latter! I was looking for a wide, orange collar with a plastic buckle over Cobra buckles as Zulu is a smaller dog and doesn’t need heavy-duty hardware that increases the weight. I was also looking for an embroidered collar over velcro labels to prevent the hair and dirt from sticking to it.

I purchased this collar via my personal email address and paid for it as a regular customer, so I have no affiliation with Tactipup at all.

Tactipup offers a wide variety of collars in different widths, with different patch, text, and hardware options so everyone can find what they are looking for on their website. The only bottleneck is that they focus on medium/large breeds so Zulu’s was actually the smallest that the Basic Tactical Dog Collar could accommodate.

This collar comes in three sizes and currently has 13 color options. The orange we have is not shown on the photo that lists the color options but you can pick it from the drop down.

I had a good experience with the company and they were responsive during the process. They are upfront about their lead time (usually 3-6 weeks) but this is displayed on top of their website at any given time for reference.

I sent an email asking about adding the text in two lines as there is only one text field on the order form and they responded the next day with information on how much text they can fit that would still be visible. I placed the order on 09/27 and received the collar on 10/14 which was faster than expected.

While I heard from others that they had issues with the collar releasing its color when wet and discoloring the dog’s fur, I have not had this experience so far. Zu has been wearing this collar while searching in the woods, going through streams, and working in heavy rain and we had no color problems. If this will ever change as we use it, I will make sure to come back and update this review.

I really like the large, quality plastic buckle on this collar, it feels strong and durable and I don’t have any safety concerns with Zulu having that over a metal buckle (although she is not one who breaks gear in general). The large metal D-ring makes it super easy to attach the leash even while wearing gloves and the 1.5" width is just perfect to keep the collar visible in her neck fluff, even from the distance.

Altogether, I am really happy with this Tactipup collar. It feels very well-made, the text is sharp and visible and the collar feels durable. We have been using it in training, so not as an everyday collar but it holds up perfectly so far. I will make sure to update this review after a while if we run into any quality issues.

Where to buy

You can find the Tactipup Personalized 1.5" Basic Tactical Dog Collar on their website, along with many other collar options.

For reference, Zulu has the smallest (14-17") collar.
