Säker, a Canadian company, aims to create gear that enables the dog and owner to move together in every environment. They are committed to creating well-fitting, durable dog gear with smart features that make adventures more comfortable and safe for dogs.

The Muse harness we are reviewing today, is building on the best features of their previous Canyon Light harness and improving on them.

About the Säker Muse Harness

The Muse harness functions as a highly adjustable three-strap on its own but it is also designed to adapt into a dog pack, an emergency sling, or a light traction harness with the appropriate add-ons. This adaptability reduces the need for multiple pieces of gear, streamlining your setup and minimizing the gear you need to carry.

Constructed with Säker’s proprietary DWR LoonSkin fabric, the Muse harness offers durability while the fabric repels water. The harness features 1-inch (25mm) wide straps, contributing to a lighter design without compromising strength. Its padding is thinner to allow for a snug and comfortable fit.

The inside of the harness is smooth and doesn’t have mesh padding to minimize dirt build-up and the chance of any chafing.

The Muse harness is available in four colors and sizes XS, S, M, and L—to accommodate a range of dog breeds and sizes. The harness has a wide adjustment range with seven adjustment points: all straps and even the section between the front legs are highly adjustable.

The harness features five buckles and four leash attachment points:

  • a front no-pull ring
  • a D-ring in the middle of the back panel
  • a webbing loop at the end of the harness
  • an attachment point on the underside of the dog for long lines/trekking

For added functionality, dog owners can purchase accessories to customize their Muse™ harness. For example, the Pouches 001 attachments converts it into a backpack for carrying supplies, while the K-911 Rescue Sling add-on allows owners to transport an injured dog safely in an emergency. Their velcro sleeves are also compatible with the Muse harness to attach velcro patches to the harness. These additions make the harness even more practical for outdoor and working dog handlers.

Säker stands behind the quality of its products by offering a Lifetime Warranty.

Säker Canyon Light Harness vs. Muse Harness

The Säker Muse™ harness is an evolution of the Canyon Light harness (read our review here) and the plan is to eventually replace the Canyon.

While both are highly adjustable three-strap harnesses with optional accessories providing modality, the Muse features Säker’s LoonSkin fabric making it water-resistant. While the Canyon harnesses have a unique feature making it easy to switch from a short Y-harness to a three-strap harness, the Muse has an additional neck buckle making it easier to put it on and remove it for gear-shy dogs.

While the Canyon Light was still a bit bulky and heavy on smaller dogs, the Muse is a much lighter, more form-fitting harness that provides the same strength.

Säker Muse Review

I was very excited to have the chance to test and review the Muse harness because I loved the idea of the Canyon Light but it still felt bulky and overbuilt on the 30-pound Zulu. The Muse is a great harness integrating all the best features of the Canyon series and providing a lighter but still sturdy option.

While the material is on the thinner and lighter side, it is still “rigid” enough to stay in place, prevent bunching up, and minimize rotation. With one neck buckle being on the left side, the harness design is asymmetrical so we noticed a very slight tendency to rotate to the left side when used off-leash but the chest plate is sturdy enough to minimize this and keep the harness in place.

Zulu had the Canyon Light in size small but the small Muse ended up being too long on the underside covering her stomach area. The chest and neck straps still fit her but after talking it through with Säker, we decided that the XS would be a better option for her and that is what you see featured in this review.

Saker Muse Harness Review | Dog Gear Review

The Säker Muse is a very well-made, outstanding-quality harness. Zulu’s XS size weighs 10.3 oz (293 g) but even the biggest (large) size only weighs 15.2 oz (430 g).

The buckles are surprisingly light and I love the use of black hardware on this harness. However, I have mixed feelings about their use of these buckles on the XS size. These buckles are easier to use in bigger sizes but I personally find securing and opening them a bit hard when the buckle is small.

The padded handle is minimalistic to fit the overall streamlined feel of the harness but still easy to grab when needed and its placement helps to effectively support dogs when they struggle on a steep trail.

All sizes have a wide adjustment range but it is really important to watch their video showing how to adjust the harness. I know many had trouble adjusting the neck straps because it is done differently than on most harnesses. The chest plate is also more adjustable than you would think at first as the two underside panels can slide into each other which allows you to bring the first chest strap even closer to the front legs.

The only thing not adjustable is the distance between the second and the third chest straps so on short dogs you might face a tradeoff between having more armpit clearance versus keeping the last strap over the ribcage. If you are unsure how a three-strap harness should fit and why that is a concern, you can read our Three-Strap Dog Harness Fitting Guide for more information.

While the second (middle) strap could sit a bit farther back on Zulu to provide a comfortable armpit clearance, I quickly realized that would push the third strap beyond the ribcage, making it sit over the belly area.

If you have a dog who is an escape artist and a flight risk, it is best to adjust three-strap harnesses with the last strap being beyond the rib cage (without being tightened to put pressure on the stomach) to prevent them from slipping out. On most dogs, this last strap seems to fall behind the ribcage but again, the Muse harness gives you so many opportunities to fine-tune the fit on any dog.

Below is a photo with more armpit clearance and the last strap going just beyond the ribcage. The cover photo shows our final adjustment with less armpit clearance but keeping the bottom panel over the ribcage.

Säker Kelp Collar Review

The Kelp Collar is designed to handle diverse environments while providing comfort and staying low-maintenance. This collar is constructed using Säker’s exclusive Kelp technology, making it 100% waterproof. It has the same strong buckle as the Muse harness and has a separate ID tag attachment loop to keep the tag away from the buckle and leash carabiner.

I loved using the Kelp collar especially for wet and muddy trails and it perfectly matches the Muse harness which is a great extra!

The Kelp Collar is available in three sizes and four colors to match the Muse colors. For a coordinated look, matching Kelp Leashes are available, featuring the same waterproof technology and color options.

Säker Trust Leash Review

The Trust Leash is designed to offer both durability and style. This leash is crafted from climbing rope material, ensuring strength and reliability during walks and outdoor activities. The leash features a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating, enhancing its resistance to water and dirt although it is not waterproof.

The Trust leash is 61" (155 cm) long which is perfect for our everyday walks and while it is sturdy, the rope is only 0.35" (9 mm) wide, keeping the weight at 181g (~6oz). The “knot” sections around the carabiner and the handle create a stylish look but also make it a little bulky. I the overall look created by the sleek rope with the two bulkier ends but handling the carabiner while holding that bulky end felt a bit awkward at the beginning. I am also unsure how I feel about the oversized brand tag sticking out under the handle as it doesn’t fit the minimalistic look but I am sure that would be removable if it is a dealbreaker for someone.

These notes are just personal preferences and overall I still love its bright color and lightweight materials and I am sure I will continue using it for plenty of walks.

The Trust Leash is also available in four colors to match the Muse harness and Kelp Collar.

Functionality Review of the Säker Muse Harness

  • No-pull correction: It has a no-pull ring and the harness can be used for no-pull training pretty well.

  • Running/Biking: Although the Muse harness is sturdy, it is not a pulling harness and is not designed to be able to handle pulling sports over a long period. It is a good option if the dog just runs next to you but make sure to adjust it so it provides comfortable armpit clearance. Saker will come out with another accessory that will attach to the end of the harness making the pressure distribution better on the chest when the dog is pulling into the harness.

  • Hiking: The durable, light material makes it great for hikes. In addition, the harness is water resistant making it a low-maintenance, easy-to-clean option for muddy hikes. The backpack addition allows the dog to carry some items.

  • City walk: It is a great and versatile harness for city walks. The multiple leash attachment points and the modular design let you adjust the gear to fit what you need for the walk of the day.

  • Easy to put on/adjust: It has five buckles and seven adjustment points. This is a highly adjustable harness that allows you to customize the fit but it also takes a while to adjust and re-adjust at the beginning to fine-tune the best setting on the dog. We didn’t have any issues with the buckles or sliders slipping or the chest straps loosening over time as long as you followed their guidance on the adjustment steps. There is a buckle on the neck strap so it doesn’t need to go over the dog’s head when putting it on/removing it.

  • Visibility: There are no reflective parts on this harness and it doesn’t come in traditional hi-visibility colors at the moment.
