Pomppa is a Finnish dog coat brand known for designing functional, performance gear that supports active dogs across a range of weather conditions and activity levels. Their products emphasise a balance of freedom of movement and protective coverage. Today, we are reviewing their newest coat: the PolarPomppa.

Note: Please note that the PolarPomppa came out as a limited edition product, and availability quickly became limited in most sizes. Pomppa has stated that the coat is expected to return next year with a full size range (maybe in a different color?).

Also, Pomppa has suspended direct shipping to the United States at the end of 2025 due to tariff-related issues and repeated delays at the border. A limited selection of Pomppa coats is currently available through their US-based retailer Clean Run.

About the PolarPomppa Coat

The PolarPomppa is a slim-fit fleece thermal shirt designed for dogs’ use from autumn through spring. It features a back panel made of thick, 100 % recycled sherpa fleece (which shows their increasing focus on sustainability) and a belly panel constructed from a super stretchy thermal tricot, offering warmth and a secure fit without leg straps.

The coat includes a side zipper to help with dressing and reduce the need to move the legs when putting it on or taking it off. Reflective lines are incorporated for visibility in low light. The upper fabric is 100 % recycled polyester, and the under part is 88 % recycled polyester with 12 % elastane.

Pomppa’s product development is based in Finland, with fabrics sourced and manufacturing carried out in China.

The design is similar to their well-known Jumppa coat with a bit more extended coverage to cover the hip area and thighs. If you want to know how the Jumppa and PolarPomppa coats compare, check out our article on the topic.

The PolarPommpa also provides extended coverage around the front and the shoulder area, while the highly elastic bottom material ensures there is still no restriction on movement.

PolarPomppa Review

PolarPomppa is a great coat to provide warmth without bulk and an extended coverage without limiting movement (thanks to the elastic material). The slim fit and absence of hind leg straps simplify the design and reduce potential points of chafing or getting caught on something in the woods, which are all great features for active dogs. Even though it covers the dog’s backend, we did not have any issues with the coat’s end flipping up or the coat itself rotating to he sides. Thanks to the snug fit, the coat stays in place even on very active dogs.

The extended back coverage ensures the large muscle groups are kept warm, which is important, even for healthy dogs, to prevent injuries, but also beneficial for dogs with joint pain on cold days. The fleece material is soft but feels sturdy. However, it is a bit less stretchy than their Jumppa coat and the fluffier material is probably more likely to collect burrs and dog hair.

The side zipper is a great addition for wiggly or gear-shy dogs - it does make dressing so much easier. You still need to lift one leg, but with the zipper open, that also goes a lot easier than in the case of the Jumppa or other slip-on designs. There is also a layer of material under the zipper to avoid getting hair stuck in there. Pomppa introduced this solution with their shell jacket, SporttiPomppa and we already appreciated it there.

The underside of the coat reaches all the way to the waistline to provide warmth where dogs lose the most heat. For this reason, it is also recommended to consider sizing down for male dogs between sizes to ensure there is enough room there.

PolarPomppa Review Summary

The PolarPomppa fits nicely into Pomppa’s coat line-up between the Jumppa and the Sportti coats as a thermal layer that balances insulation, fit, and ease of use for everyday walks and active sessions in cooler weather.

Its warmer fleece back and stretchable belly panel offer both protection and mobility, and the side zipper simplifies putting the coat on and off without stress for the handler or the dog. For owners looking for a warm midlayer that stays in place and accommodates active dogs’ movements, the PolarPomppa is a good option on the market.
