I purchased the PETSFIT Portable Dog Kennel before going on a road trip. We were limited on space in the car so I needed something that folds flat and is light enough to easily get it in and out of the places where we stayed. Zulu loves her crate at home and would never try to get out or chew it so I haven’t had concerns like that. When choosing a textile pop-up crate it is important to know that none of them are escape-proof or chew-proof, regardless of what the product description says.

This soft crate worked very well both when Zulu just needed a break from playing with everyone or if we stepped out for dinner and I wanted to be sure she was safe and comfortable in the meantime. She has a hard time turning off by herself, especially in a new environment but crate training helped her tremendously with that and it makes traveling more relaxing for both of us.

PETSFIT Portable Dog Kennel Review

The PETSFIT Portable Dog Kennel folds flat and is super easy to set up why zipping up the two ends. It has fiber rods that keep it in place and provide decent stability.

It has a mesh top section on all sides that allows for plenty of airflow and gives the option for the dog to look around, while the solid base sections on three sides create a safe place for the dog and offer more durability. The zip-up door on the front is fully mesh.

I chose this crate as it is proportionally taller than most pop-up crates that have the same width and height. I choose the 31.0"L x 21.0"W x 26.0"H size which offers plenty of space for Zu to fully stand up and stretch if she wants to.

There is a handle on the top of the crate which makes carrying easy when assembled. However, it doesn’t come with a case and there are no buckles to secure the sides together when it is folded so carrying it in and out is not as comfortable as it could be with a little improvement.

You can just use a bungee cord to hold it together while carrying which is not the nicest solution but it works.

There is also a big pocket on the bag for extra storage. I liked the idea of having this extra space to stow some stuff away but in reality, it is impractical to have it on the back where it will be the least accessible in most situations.

It has a waterproof base layer and comes with a mattress. This is a thick and rigid mattress so it is not going to bunch up in the crate even if the dog is digging around before settling. The outside is removable and machine washable which makes it easy to keep it clean even though the fluffy material can trap a lot of dirt as the dog goes in and out.

Functionality Review of the PETSFIT Portable Dog Kennel

  • In-Car use: a soft crate can help dogs to relax in the car and keep the dirt contained but they will easily fly through the sides in an accident. It is important to know that they don’t provide safety in the car.
  • At-Home Use: it can be an easy and reasonably priced option for dogs who are calm while crated. It allows you to easily pack it up when not needed or move it around as it is lightweight. Not suitable for dogs with separation anxiety or for dogs who chew on the crate or want to get out when left alone. Their reasonable price point can help with sizing up to provide more room for dogs as needed.
  • Using it for Traveling, Hotels, Events, etc.: Collapsible soft crates are designed for these use cases but think about this kennel as the base option. It works, but if you are willing to spend a bit more, you can get one that has a handle and buckles to secure the sides together when collapsed making carrying it so much easier. Again, I just wanted a basic option as I wasn’t sure how much use this would get and this crate delivers exactly that.

Review Summary

I am happy with our PETSFIT Portable Dog Kennel as it was a reasonably priced option that arrived in two days. Zulu has long legs and big ears and most similar soft kennels with the same ground area were 20-30% shorter which wouldn’t let her sit and stand up comfortably. As this is used while we are traveling, I wanted to keep it on the roomier side and have the space to add more blankets for the winter without making it tight for her.

The material seems durable and the frame provides enough stability. With all these soft crates, the weak point is usually the zipper and this one is no exception. It seems we are fine as long as I am gentle with the zipper but I see how that can break overtime.

To summarize, this foldable soft crate is a good option for the price: it doesn’t have fancy additions like a side door or the option to stow away the mesh door when opening but in return, it tends to be cheaper than the other products that offer those.
