The Details of the Non-Stop Dogwear Trekking Fleece

Non-Stop Dogwear is known for its high-quality and practical dog gear and created the Trekking Fleece Dog Jacket for active dogs who just need a bit more warmth on chilly days.

The Trekking Jacket is made from a soft yet durable fleece fabric and is reinforced at the spots where higher tear and wear are expected. It is designed to cover the dog’s large muscle groups and provides warmth without restricting movement.

The fit of his jacket is highly adjustable by two elastic cinch points, the chest strap, and the popper adjustments offering two settings above the tail. The elastic and wide leg straps ensure that the back of the coat stays in place and doesn’t flip up even in strong wind.

There are small reflective tabs added to the coat for visibility in low-light conditions and there is a leash opening on the back so it can be used over a harness as well.

The Trekking Fleece Dog Jacket is available in one color (gray, wine, and teal) and comes in sizes ranging from 27 to 70, accommodating dogs of various breeds and sizes. It is machine washable on a gentle cycle at 30 degrees, with a double rinse recommended. To avoid damaging the coat, avoid fabric softeners, and use a low-heat setting for tumble drying. The jacket should not be ironed, bleached, or dry-cleaned.

The Trekking Fleece jacket is designed to be a sweater/baselayer with a larger coverage to keep the big muscle groups warm before/after or even during exercises to minimize the chances of injuries. Due to this, the sizing of this coat tends to run bigger than Non-Stop’s winter coat sizing.

As we discussed in the Non-Stop Glacier Wool Coat review, Zulu needed a size 50 from that coat once she stopped growing, however from the Non-stop base layers, the size 50 was very baggy on her, and kept sliding to the side.

After trying both the 45 and 50 sizes on Zulu and seeing this jacket on many dogs, I highly recommend sizing down even if your dog is in the middle of the sizing range. Non-stop Dogwear also has great customer support and they can help you with sizing if you are unsure.

Below are a few photos comparing the size 45 and 50 on Zulu, and as you see there is a big difference and the 45 fits her so much better.

The sizing difference is most visible and problematic on the back end - mainly because the leg loops on the 50 were so much looser that they did not keep the jacket in place at all so I ended up with the extensive back section sliding to one side all the time. Having oversized leg loops is also a concern because they can get caught in the woods, rip the jacket, and/or cause injuries.

Besides the sizing hiccups, I can’t find any issues to mention with the Trekking Fleece. This is a very well-made jacket made of high-quality materials. It is still packable and comes with a little storage bag that makes it easy to bring it along for hikes or road trips.

Many are concerned about the white colors for a dog jacket but this is not designed to be worn on rainy/muddy days anyways and it is pretty easy to machine wash so we did not have an issue with that so far. However, we are mainly using it for chilly (dry) morning walks and to keep Zu warm in her car crate so none of that comes with excessive dirt. It is probably not an ideal option if your dog likes to roll around on walks.

As a pro for the color and material choice: on this coat, Zulu’s crazy amount of shedding is finally not super visible which can make other sweaters look worn pretty quickly.

With the fleece material, we need to keep in mind that it can get caught and be ripped by thorns and tends to pick up leaves and such so it is not an ideal option for running through the woods.

When this jacket came out, many were concerned about the Aluminium attachment used on the chest strap. Once the coat is adjusted correctly, I have not had any issues with this opening up but it is not impossible, especially if dogs are rolling around or playing with other dogs.

Review Summary

The Trekking Fleece Dog Jacket is an excellent choice for keeping dogs warm and minimizing the risk of injuries during or after exercise thanks to its larger muscle coverage. However, its oversized design can make it tricky to get the perfect fit, so sizing down is recommended in most cases, especially for dogs between sizes.

This jacket is not a super warm winter coat, more like a baselayer/ sweater so it’s best suited for dry, chilly conditions and less rough terrain.
