About the Hurtta Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer
The Hurtta Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer is designed with active dogs in mind, offering insulation in cold weather while remaining lightweight enough to be used under a waterproof shell or as a standalone layer in milder temperatures. The reflective piping and the additional reflector on the neck section provide visibility in low-light conditions.
The adjustable waistband, neckline, and back length ensure a customized fit for dogs with different body shapes and sizes.
The Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer Coat is made from a soft, fleece fabric that effectively retains body heat but is elastic enough not to restrict movement. Its water-repellent finish offers protection against light moisture, making it a practical option for misty walks or damp weather.
The coat incorporates 50% recycled materials which reflects Hurtta’s commitment to sustainability. It is currently available in nine sizes and two color options - both with reversible sides. Zulu is wearing a size 45 (EU) / 18 (US) in Blackberry color.
Hurtta Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer Review
The Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer is a very lightweight sweater that is still sturdy and feels well-made.
The materials are great because they collect very minimal dog hair - especially the smoother grey side of this coat which is a huge plus for dogs who always shed. We have been using the Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer as a standalone sweater or as a base layer under raincoats for two months now and it is holding up very well with no signs of tear and wear even though Zulu is running through the woods while wearing it.
If the dog is running through dense undergrowth, I would recommend folding the collar section down to tuck in the excess material of the elastic cinch point to minimize the chances of getting snagged on something. The waist adjustment point is somewhat tucked in on the underside of the coat and the back end cinch point usually lays flat staying out of the way.
The three adjustment points make it very easy and quick to create a snug fit on any dog although, on Zulu’s deep chest, I first need to loosen the cinch point around her waits before taking it off and tightening it again when putting it on the next time.
The Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer doesn’t have buckles or velcro straps so it needs to be pulled over the head and the front legs need to be lifted to put it on the dog. While this might not be ideal for gear-shy dogs, this large coverage and snug fit keep the coat in place perfectly without rotation.
The high neck area and the extra coverage around the chest ensure that the coat keeps the heat in and minimizes the cold air getting in contact with the shoulder joint. While the front section of the chest piece fully covers the shoulders, it does not interfere with the leg movement due to the elastic material and because the cut-up design above the shoulders allows the layers to slide and stretch more as the dog moves.
Altogether the Hurtta Razzle-Dazzle Midlayer is an impressive sweater that is great for providing extra warmth for active dogs. It is not fully waterproof and is not a thick coat, more like an activewear for chilly autumn days.
It is a big plus that it is easy to maintain and clean and it dries fast. It doesn’t collect as much dog hair as most fleece sweaters and is super packable, making it easy to bring it along in case the weather turns.
