About the Hurtta Extreme Warmer III Eco

The Extreme Warmer III ECO is designed to protect active dogs in frigid winter conditions with temperatures between -5C and -30C (+20 and -20 F).

The Extreme Warmer III ECO features a high tricot hood that provides additional wind protection for the dog’s neck and ears and helps keep the snow out. The jacket offers 20% adjustability in every size with 4-6 adjustment points that allows for a customized fit.

The jacket’s durable mechanical stretch shell fabric is made from 100% recycled materials, while the lining consists of 50% recycled polyester, reflecting Hurtta’s commitment to sustainability. A fluorocarbon-free Rudolf ECO water-repellent treatment is used to weatherproof the coat without harmful chemicals. The wide belly flap and the extra front piece offer additional protection from the cold.

The coat comes in nine sizes and sizes 30-65 have a harness opening while size 25 features a built-in harness and leash loop.

What was updated with the release of this version of the coat?

Hurtta has made several updates to the Extreme Warmer III ECO to enhance warmth, fit, weather resistance, and durability. The new model features a softer, fluffier insulation that mimics down, creating small air pockets for improved heat retention. This upgrade makes the jacket even warmer than the previous version while keeping it light. The fit remains largely the same, but the hood has been refined for a better fit around the dog’s head, and additional space around the front legs allows for freer movement.

To improve weather protection, the seams are now fully taped, providing better resistance against wet and cold conditions. While the coat is highly weatherproof (has a water column over 10,000 mm), it is not designed as a full raincoat. A new repair opening has been added inside the jacket, marked by a “Hurtta repair” tag and contrasting stitching color, allowing owners to fix minor tears easily. The plastic buckles on the belly webbing belt have been replaced with durable metallic G-hook buckles and slide adjusters for increased longevity. Additionally, a new hanging loop has been added inside the collar, making the jacket easier to hang, dry, and store.

Hurtta Extreme Warmer III Eco Review

The Hurtta Extreme Warmer III was the first winter jacket I have used from Hurtta and it impressed me immediately how well-made and smartly designed it is. The adjustment points are well placed and they indeed allow for a significant adjustment to fine-tune the fit for dogs in-between sizes.

I had to size up for Zulu to accommodate her deep chest and I was worried the coat would be too loose on her everywhere else but size 45 (EU) / 18 (US) fit her perfectly after adjustments. There is even an adjustment point on the underside of the coat to shorten the length of the coat and that allowed to create a perfect fit around her back end.

As this coat is designed for extreme cold, it has extended coverage over the back legs, and hips but it still has a perfectly designed cut to allow for free tail carrying. There is even a snap that you can use to connect the two sides of the back end under the tail if you need to keep that snugly in place.

It comes with leg loops to hold the back end of the coat in place and prevent rotation or flipping up in high wind. It can be used without the leg loops for calmer dogs or leash walks but it tends to rotate and slide once the dog is off leash without them due to all the excess material in the back.

I am very impressed with the materials used for this coat. The outer shell is super sturdy and can withstand heavy use. The inner lining is made with a combination of recycled PES and PES technical 180g knitted lining, with a unique heat-reflecting aluminum foil pattern. Another great feature of this lining is that it barely collects dog hair and dirt, making maintenance super easy.

Zulu was very comfortable wearing this coat even in frigid temps while waiting in the car during training and was toasty when I checked under it.

We received many questions about the front design of this coat asking if it limits shoulder movement. It is actually designed very smartly as the front flap is a separate section as the piece runs back between the front legs so it is not being pulled snugly around the front of the dogs. The extended coverage is created to ensure that the shoulder joints are kept warm even in high winds and frigid temps. However, when the dog runs, the front flap gets pushed up by the movement allowing free leg movement.

Many were also questioning the use of a G-hook instead of the plastic buckle in the chest strap but we never had any issues with it opening or loosening up.

The only part of this coat that I didn’t find as useful as I expected is the high tricot hood. I was hoping it would be a thicker material that stays in place more but it is so thin that it always slid back to the base of her neck when Zu started running around, even with the elastic adjuster tightened. It is still a great addition to keep the snow and cold air out but I was hoping it would fit extending over the neck section of the coat as displayed on the website photos.

I can imagine it would stay in place if you pull it all the way up to cover the ears and tighten it more around the head but I always kept pulling it up to keep it higher around her neck.

The Hurtta Extreme Warmer is an incredibly well-made coat and I appreciate the effort to almost entirely use recycled materials to create it. Every part of this coat is perfectly designed with not only attention to detail but with innovation and smart additions that make this an outstanding dog coat option for frigid temps.
