We were excited to compare two popular Pomppa coats, the JumppaPomppa (blue) and their new PolarPomppa (red), on Zulu, our deep-chested Border Collie. We previously used and reviewed a Jumppa coat on Mia and loved it, but Zulu requires a different size, so this was our first chance to properly test both styles on her.
Both coats shown here are size 48, and while they both provide a snug, athletic fit, they feel noticeably different in real life.
Note: Please note that the PolarPomppa is a limited edition product, and availability is already restricted in most sizes. Pomppa has stated that the coat is expected to return next year with a full size range (maybe in a different color?). Also, Pomppa has suspended direct shipping to the United States at the end of 2025 due to tariff-related issues and repeated delays at the border. A limited selection of Pomppa coats is currently available through their US-based retailer Clean Run.
Fit & Feel
JumppaPomppa Fit
The JumppaPomppa fits snugly across Zulu’s chest, while its highly elastic fleece allows for excellent freedom of movement. This coat hugs the body closely and feels more compressive overall, especially on a deep chest. While it fits well once on, the tighter opening and pull-over design make it a bit more effort to put on and take off compared to the Polar. Based on the snugness around Zulu’s chest, I would be inclined to size up for her, but a size bigger would definitely be too long on her back.
That said, this close fit is exactly what makes the Jumppa such a strong choice for active dogs. It stays in place, doesn’t shift during movement, and works extremely well as a thermal layer.

JumppaPomppa
Breathable & Stretchy
A lightweight, highly elastic fleece layer that offers freedom of movement and a snug, athletic fit for active dogs and easy layering.

PolarPomppa Fit
The PolarPomppa was released at the beginning of this season (in 2025) in a limited edition color. It fits similarly snug but feels just slightly roomier through the chest and lower body. The back material is less stretchy than the Jumppa, but there is a touch more fabric overall, which helps balance that out for Zulu’s build.
The biggest difference in daily use is the side zipper, which makes dressing dramatically easier - especially for dogs with deep chests or broader shoulders. This alone can be a deciding factor for many dog owners.

PolarPomppa
Warm & Practical
A warmer, double-fleece coat with added back coverage and a convenient side zipper, designed for cold-weather comfort and easy on/off.

Warmth & Coverage Differences
One of the most important distinctions between JumppaPomppa and PolarPomppa is warmth.
The JumppaPomppa is a lighter fleece designed for year-round use. It provides warmth without bulk, making it ideal for cool weather, high activity levels, or layering under a shell or raincoat.

The PolarPomppa, on the other hand, is a warmer option. Its double-thickness sherpa fleece provides noticeably more insulation, and it offers slightly more back-end coverage along the spine and hindquarters. This makes it better suited for colder temperatures, slower-paced walks, or dogs that chill easily.

Ease of Use & Practical Features
From a usability standpoint, the PolarPomppa has a clear advantage thanks to its zippered side opening, which simplifies putting the coat on and off — something we especially appreciate with a deep-chested dog. However, both coats feature Pomppa’s characteristic streamlined design, reflective details for low-light visibility, and a fit that stays secure without leg straps.
It’s also worth noting that the PolarPomppa is a limited edition release, and sizes are already hard to find. Pomppa is planning to release it again next year in all sizes.

When We’d Choose Each Coat
These two Pomppa coats serve slightly different purposes.
We’d choose the PolarPomppa for:
- Colder fall and winter conditions
- Dogs that need more warmth
- Easier on/off thanks to the zipper, especially for deep-chested dogs or for dogs who do not like their legs being lifted (only one leg needs to be pulled through)
We’d choose the JumppaPomppa for:
- Layering under another coat
- Milder cold or high-energy activities
- Dogs that benefit from maximum stretch and a snug fit

Final Thoughts
Both the JumppaPomppa and PolarPomppa features Pomppa’s design offering extended coverage and high-quality materials, but the differences in warmth, stretch, and ease of use make each better suited to specific needs.
